Focal is a Chrome extension that records your browser tab and automatically adds cursor highlights, keystroke callouts, and zoom-on-click. This page explains what Focal handles while it does that, and, more importantly, what it doesn't.

The short version: everything Focal records stays on your device. Focal has no server. Nothing is uploaded, synced, sold, or shared with anyone, including us.

What Focal records

Focal only records while you have explicitly clicked "Start recording," and only the tab you started it from. While recording, it handles:

  • Tab video and audio — the visual content and sound of the tab you chose to record.
  • Microphone audio — only if you turn on the microphone toggle before recording. It's mixed into the same local recording.
  • Cursor position and clicks — logged so Focal can render the on-screen cursor highlight and decide where to zoom in the exported video.
  • Keyboard shortcuts — combinations like ⌘K or Ctrl+S, and special keys like Enter or Escape, so they can be shown as an on-screen badge. Plain typing (letters and numbers with no modifier key) is never captured or shown, specifically so text you type into forms, documents, or password fields never ends up logged.

Where it goes

Nowhere. Focal doesn't have a backend, an analytics service, or any network request that leaves your browser. The recording and the cursor/click/keystroke data used to render it are stored in your browser's local IndexedDB, the same on-device storage mechanism any web page can use, and are only ever read by the Focal tabs on your own machine.

How long it's kept

A recording stays in local storage until you export it (or save the original) and close the review tab, at which point Focal clears the staged copy. If you never finish reviewing a recording, you can remove it at any time by clearing the extension's site data from chrome://extensions, or by uninstalling Focal.

Permissions Focal uses, in plain language

  • Capture a tab — to record the video and audio of the tab you choose.
  • Run in the background — to encode the recording, since Chrome doesn't allow that on the visible page itself.
  • Know which tab is active — so Focal records the tab you actually meant to record.
  • Add the on-screen overlay — to draw the cursor dot, click ripple, and keystroke badge on the page being recorded.
  • Save files — to save your exported video to your downloads folder.
  • Show notifications — to tell you when a recording is ready or something went wrong.

Third parties

Focal does not sell, rent, or transfer your data to anyone. It isn't used for advertising, and it isn't used to evaluate creditworthiness or for lending purposes. There is nothing to share in the first place, since nothing leaves your device.

Changes to this policy

If Focal's data practices ever change, for example if a future feature needs to send data somewhere, this page will be updated first and the change will be reflected in the extension before it ships.
